One of the management procedures in breast cancer is the surgical removal of the underarm or armpit lymph nodes close to the affected breast. A side effect of this is known as Axillary web syndrome or cording.

This usually comes with a web of thick, ropelike structures under the skin of the inner arm. Axillary web syndrome is often characterized by painful scar tissue formation and adaptive shortening of underarm muscles extending from the  underarm down the inner part of the arm or chest wall limiting shoulder and arm mobility.

Result of a study have revealed that a treatment program of progressive arm exercises and manual lymph drainage designed by a physiotherapist results in reduced pain and improved motion compared with standard arm exercises.
