Knee Osteoarthritis
The knee is one of the largest and the most complex joints in the human body. It is a weight-bearing and a hinge type synovial joint, which mainly allows for movements such as flexion and extension (and a small degree of medial and lateral rotation). It is formed by articulations between the femur, tibia and patella (knee cap).
The knee joint has been reported to be the most commonly degenerative joint especially among Africans. In other words, slow progressive destruction of the articular cartilages occurs more in the knee joint among Africans. Osteoarthritis of the knee tends to cause the greatest burden to the adult population as pain and stiffness in this joint often leads to significant disability requiring surgical intervention. As a result, OA of the knee is the most common reason for Total knee Replacement (TKR).
